From the President:

Last semester was great, wasn’t it?  Everyone had fun at Wildacres; we had excellent entertainment and plenty of fellowship and good food. If you missed it this year, arrange to come in 2011.  We also had a number of popular classes in the last four months. Many folks enjoyed the class on jewelry making, and the trip to the Brevard Music Center received excellent reviews, including this one from a participant:

“I just came home from the music center program and must let you know how enjoyable it was.  It was very professional, well planned, and delightful.  Mary Ann Deubert did a super job as tour guide!  She handled things smoothly.  What a great opportunity to learn all about this fascinating music center in our midst.  I knew nothing about Brevard Music Center and now feel well informed.  The staff made fine presentations and were super patient answering lots of questions.  We even got to see Keith Lockhart conducting a rehearsal with the orchestra.   Wonderful!!  I would love to do this same tour again next year.”

In addition to the Antebellum Adventure to Georgia, please take note of the other classes and activities that our volunteers have organized.  Classes taught by Charlotte and Syd Self are always interesting, and this semester they will be giving a lecture on The Mysterious Maya of Yucatan.  I am sure there will be a number of interesting photographs that will be shown.

In other news, we welcome our new coordinator, Gayle Covey.  Gayle came from IRIS Systems, Inc., a small consulting firm she co-founded in 1984 to design and develop management and executive information systems for major retail banks.  She semi-retired with her husband to Hendersonville, where they are regionally competitive bridge players, representing NC, SC, and GA in national competitions.  Gayle had a “bucket list” desire to get in one more career – working in education – and that brought her to us.  Three months into the job, she says she has never come to work happier than when she comes to Blue Ridge Center for Lifelong Learning.

Everyone in the organization is a volunteer except for Gayle. If you are interested in helping, please contact her at 694-1740 or by email.  We need a variety of talents including facilitating and scheduling classes and trips, helping with our newsletter, and assisting our treasurer.

I hope to see you soon,
Carl Schoendorfer
