We
think of the Deep South and its coastal regions when we hear the word
“plantation.” The reality is that scores of these
agrarian estates were built and thrived in Western North Carolina and
Upstate South Carolina. Robin Lattimore, historian and
award-winning author says, “I can count 30-plus surviving
plantation homes around Rutherfordton alone.”
Enjoy
a tour of Green River Plantation,
which is listed on the National
Register of Historic Places and, according to Lattimore, the most
complete plantation community in the area. Green River was built by
slave labor in the Federal style (1807), with a Greek revival addition
(1820-1840), and then a center hall to join both portions. Green
River’s 27-room mansion was supported by a smoke house, ice
house, kitchen, stables, and slave quarters. There was even a school.
Following the plantation house tour, lunch will be served in the Gate
House. This wonderful piece of history has fascinating stories to tell.
