Mountains, Magnolias & Outlet Shopping Too

Wednesday, March 28, 2012
10:00 am until approximately 5:30 pm

We think of the Deep South and its coastal regions when we hear the word “plantation.” The reality is that scores of these agrarian estates were built and thrived in Western North Carolina and Upstate South Carolina.  Robin Lattimore, historian and award-winning author says, “I can count 30-plus surviving plantation homes around Rutherfordton alone.”

Enjoy a tour of Green River Plantation, which is listed on the National Register of Historic Places and, according to Lattimore, the most complete plantation community in the area. Green River was built by slave labor in the Federal style (1807), with a Greek revival addition (1820-1840), and then a center hall to join both portions. Green River’s 27-room mansion was supported by a smoke house, ice house, kitchen, stables, and slave quarters. There was even a school. Following the plantation house tour, lunch will be served in the Gate House. This wonderful piece of history has fascinating stories to tell.

Since 1931, the Tanner name has been synonymous with ladies’ fine apparel and accessories. Tanner styling continues to be classic and timeless, yet is  inspired by international trends and has a truly modern flair. The Doncaster/Tanner Outlet campus offers a warehouse where current merchandise is offered at discount, and last season’s clothing is sold for 40 -70% off. In the warehouse outlet, everything is category-priced from $19 to $69. For example, all sweaters in the warehouse are priced at $20, all slacks $30. Sizes 2P – 24 W.
