Blue Ridge Parkway Visitor Destination Center
(self-drive)

 Thursday, May 6, 2010  10:30am - 1pm

Cost: $10 per person (including a specially-arranged tour);

Registration deadline is April 29.

Pack a picnic lunch and join us by 10:30 am for a guided tour of the Destination Center's LEED (Leadership in Energy and Environmental Design) building, and an optional trail hike. This welcome center building has plants growing on the roof as well as unique water and energy conservation characteristics. It is part of a National Heritage Area on the Blue Ridge Parkway, which is now celebrating its 75th anniversary.

A park service Ranger will provide our group a tour of this building explaining its many unique "green" building features. We will view a film about the Parkway and explore the exhibits of the area's cultural heritage, diverse natural resources, and recreational opportunities. Weather permitting, we will hike a one mile loop trail (optional) and picnic before leaving.

For more information about the Blue Ridge Parkway Visitor Destination Center, see the Times-News article at:  Visitor Center

Location
: The Destination Center is at milepost 384 on the Blue Ridge Parkway (north of Asheville and about a mile south of the Folkart Center). After registration, driving directions will be provided.

Activity Level:   For the Destination Center only, this is an easy trip; there is an elevator, seating in various locations, and all surfaces are flat. An optional one-mile trail hike is rated moderate; it is a loop with uneven surfaces and
some incline. If you plan to hike, sturdy shoes and layered clothing are recommended.
