The program highlights Maud Powell's childhood studies, the challenges she faced, and her courage in overcomming barriers to become one of America's most revered and beloved musicians. Participants will gain important perspectives on the cultural atmosphere of the era and how this artist became a pivotal force in the development of our classical music. |
Presenter: Karen Shaffer is author of the 1988 critically-acclaimed definitive biography, Maud Powell, Pioneer American Violinist. As founder and President of the Maud Powll society for Music and Education, she has restored an important musical legacy. Karen is co-founder and co-editor of The Maud Powell Signature, an online magazine devoted to the contributions and achievements of women in classical music. The co-founder of the annual Maud Powell Music Festival in Peru, IL, she has overseen reissuance of Powell's recordings, commemorative concerts and exhibits, and presentations in colleges and schools. Karen resides in Brevard.
Class registration is one form per person. You must be a member of BRCLL to participate. Please register early, as classes fill quickly.
