The Songs We Sing: Where do They Come From?

1 Session
Tuesday, April 11
1:00 - 3:00 p.m.
BRCC, Room 150, Patton Building
Member Fee: $20, Non-Member Fee: $30

Join us for a rollicking good time as we roll back the years to explore the genesis of some of our favorite songs. Many of the tunes we traditionally sing in America came from other parts of the world, and as a result, were very different in their origins. During this class, we will take a dozen or so of these songs, including “Dixie”, “Streets of Laredo”, etc. and trace their beginnings which often lie in the most unlikely places!  You will be entertained by several different instruments and lots of lively music. Singing along will be greatly encouraged. You may also be able to get some hands-on experience!

Presenter Don Burger has been a performing musician for 50 years.  He plays 12 different instruments and has recorded 5 albums.  He has taught the mountain dulcimer, piano and guitar for 12 years.  He has been coordinator and staff member of many folk festivals since 1985.  He also has a Masters Degree in Curriculum Development, Adult Education.
