This program will be two sessions about our very own, in-our-backyard, National Forest! A sampling of topics to be addressed includes the human, cultural, political, and natural history of the Pisgah National Forest; the history of the Pisgah Ranger District; the Appalachian Ranger District; and the Grandfather Ranger District.  Subjects to whet your curiosity include the first forestry school in the U.S., The Cradle of Forestry, PARI, Sliding Rock and the Appalachian Trail as well as several waterfalls, mountains, trails,  instrumental individuals, and places that you did not know that you didn’t know. This National Forest comprises in excess of 500,000 acres.

Marci Spencer was once a nurse practitioner, but when she retired she became an author and a speaker. Her books include Pisgah National Forest: A History; Clingman’s Dome, Highest Mountain in the Great Smokies, two children's books and an upcoming one about the history of the Nantahala National Forest.  She spends time in the classroom with children, has taught classes for adults, and is a public speaker for the Great Smoky Mountains National Park and the Appalachian Bear Rescue. She holds N.C. Environmental Educator and Southern Appalachian Naturalist certificates.
